The ogre who plays the part of an ogre needs to discover who he is & someone to love him. The princess who waits to be rescued needs to discover who she is & someone to love, including, most importantly, herself. The donkey is simply another furry song-slinging sidekick because every hero's journey needs a moral compass, and every moral compass has an ass in it.
